Watch Care Questions, Answered

What owners most often ask before they bring a watch in, grouped by service. If your question is not here, message us.

Servicing

What does a full watch service involve?

The watch is taken apart, ultrasonically cleaned and inspected, worn parts are replaced, and the movement is re-lubricated and reassembled. It is then regulated and timed, and the case is tested for water resistance before it leaves the workshop.

How regularly should a fine watch go in for service?

It depends on the movement, the oil's condition and how the watch is worn. Instead of setting a fixed number of years, we examine the watch and tell you where it stands, so you know what it needs now.

Do you service mechanical and automatic watches from every maker?

Watches from Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Tudor and F.P. Journe are all within our remit, as are many other Swiss and independent makers. Bring the watch and we will confirm we can take it on.

Will servicing affect the water resistance of my watch?

Water resistance is tested as part of the service, and gaskets and seals are checked while the case is open. If any seal has aged, this is when it is found.

Polishing

Does polishing remove metal from my watch?

Any refinishing takes a little metal, which is why we keep it to a minimum. The aim is to restore surfaces while preserving the original edges, bevels and proportions, rather than to make a case look new at the cost of its shape.

Can polishing remove deep scratches and dents?

Light marks usually respond well. Deeper damage is assessed case by case, and where a dent is deep enough, laser welding can rebuild the metal so that the surface is not simply ground away to reach it.

Will the brushed and polished finishes stay distinct?

Yes. Brushed and polished surfaces are treated each in their own character, so the contrast designed into the case and bracelet is restored rather than blended into one uniform shine.

Should I polish a vintage watch?

Often the better choice is to do little or nothing. With a vintage piece we discuss what its condition adds to its character, and only refinish what you decide is worth changing.

Repair

My watch has stopped. What happens next?

A watchmaker examines it to find the cause, which might be as simple as a worn part or as involved as a movement fault. You are told what was found and what is recommended, and repair starts only once you approve.

Can you repair a watch that gains or loses time?

Yes. Gaining and losing can come from magnetisation, dirt, worn components or a movement in need of regulation. We find the cause first and then correct it.

Do you repair crowns, crystals and chronograph functions?

Yes. Crown and stem faults, crystal replacement, chronograph, date and winding problems all fall within our repair work, for modern and vintage watches alike. A watchmaker examines the watch first and tells you what is wrong and what putting it right would involve.

What if the part I need is hard to find?

Where a component cannot easily be sourced, a watchmaker can often repair the original or restore it. We will say plainly what is possible before you decide how to proceed.

Repinning

What is bracelet repinning?

Over years of wear the pins, collars and screws joining the links wear down, and the bracelet stretches and rattles. Repinning replaces those worn parts, restoring a firm, even bracelet without swapping the links themselves.

Do my existing links stay on the bracelet?

Wherever possible, yes. Every link is inspected individually, and we replace only the small parts that have worn. The original links stay with the bracelet unless one is damaged beyond sensible repair, and we would explain that to you first.

Can my bracelet be resized at the same time?

Bracelet resizing can be carried out alongside repinning, so that the fit and the firmness of the bracelet are corrected together in a single piece of work, and you collect it once.

How do I know if my bracelet needs repinning?

Common signs are a bracelet that sounds loose when you shake your wrist, a clasp that sits differently than it used to, or a visible gap between links where there was none.

Authentication

What does an authentication examination cover?

A specialist examines the case, dial, movement and bracelet, and checks that the serial number and reference are consistent with one another. The findings are set down in a written report.

When should I have a watch authenticated?

Before buying or selling a watch, before insuring it, or when you inherit one and want to know exactly what you have. An independent opinion is most useful before a decision is final.

Is the assessment truly independent?

ChronoCare is not authorised by or affiliated with any watch manufacturer, so our examination is the opinion of independent experts. We tell you what we found, whichever way it points.

Will I receive the result in writing?

Yes. Every authentication examination ends with a written findings report that you can keep with the watch and show to a buyer, insurer or advisor. It sets out what was examined and what the examiner found.

Booking and visiting

Where is the workshop?

ChronoCare is at Prive Residences, Dubai Hills, Dubai, UAE, where the Chrono Group showroom is also based. Message us first so we can confirm a time and have a watchmaker ready to see you.

When can I visit?

We receive visitors Monday to Saturday between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, by appointment. The workshop is closed on Sundays, so please bear that in mind when you are choosing a day to come in.

How do I arrange an appointment?

Use WhatsApp on +971 56 342 6757, call the same number, or email info@chrono-group.ae. Tell us the watch and your concern, and we will suggest a time that suits you and confirm it by message.

Do you give prices before work begins?

We will not name a figure before seeing the watch, because condition changes everything. Once it has been examined, we set out what is needed and agree the work with you before we begin.
